About

Glenn McKimmin

I photograph people who carry a world forward.

For seventeen years I have travelled to places where old ways of life still hold, from the Altai mountains of Mongolia to the forests of Sri Lanka and the island of Sumba. I did not go to document an ending. I went to stand in front of people who are still here.

Lineage grew from that. Each portrait is made the same way: one white backdrop, one quiet light, nothing borrowed from the landscape behind the sitter. Take away the setting and you take away the postcard. What is left is a person, and the long line of people behind them.

I am a Fujifilm X Photographer, and I work between Sydney and Bali. Every print is signed and numbered by hand, made on archival cotton rag, and arrives with its certificate and its story.

I also lead small-group photography journeys to many of these places, for photographers who want to see them for themselves. More than 500 guests have travelled with me, and every journey is built around the light, the people and the time to make real photographs.

The work is not about what is disappearing. It is about who is still here.
