Capture the Wild Beauty of Australia’s Alpine Wilderness – A Winter Photography Adventure Like No Other
This isn’t just another workshop it’s a winter expedition built from years of experience, patience, and a genuine love for the alpine wilderness. For over seven years, I’ve led photographers deep into Australia’s Snowy Mountains, guiding them through some of the most striking and challenging conditions the country has to offer.
Each journey is designed to help you connect more deeply with both your craft and the environment from shooting in sub-zero temperatures at sunrise to tracking wildlife across snow-covered plains. You’ll learn how to work with light in unpredictable conditions, compose scenes that feel alive, and uncover the quiet beauty that hides in this raw, frozen landscape.

Why This Tour Is Different?
Why This Tour Is Unlike Any Other
While most photography workshops keep to the main roads and familiar lookouts, this tour goes far beyond. Drawing on years of experience in Australia’s alpine wilderness, I take you into remote areas that few ever reach places where snow gums twist against the wind, brumbies move through the mist, and the light shifts by the minute.
Every frame is yours alone no crowds, no noise, just the stillness of winter and the thrill of photographing raw, untouched beauty. This is an adventure shaped by knowledge, timing, and patience the kind of access that only comes from years of exploring this landscape and understanding its rhythm.
Expert Guidance from Glenn McKimmin
One of the most valuable parts of joining the Wild Alpine Photography Tour is the chance to learn directly from me in the field. After leading hundreds of photographers across the world for more than 17 years and running this alpine workshop for seven I know how to help photographers find their creative edge, even in the toughest winter conditions.
As a Fujifilm X Photographer and internationally recognised landscape professional, I’ve built a career on chasing light in wild places. In the alpine wilderness, that means teaching you how to adapt to the weather, read the landscape, and work with the subtle tones and textures that define Australia’s high country.
My approach is simple: real, hands-on guidance. Whether it’s refining your composition in falling snow, managing exposure in blinding white, or anticipating wildlife behaviour, you’ll get personalised feedback designed to elevate your craft. This isn’t about theory it’s about being out there, immersed in the moment, and capturing images that truly mean something.
Landscapes of the Alpine — A Photographer’s Dream
The Raw Beauty of Australia’s High Country
In the depths of winter, Australia’s alpine region transforms into a landscape few ever truly experience. Frost clings to the valleys, mist drifts through snow gums, and the mountains shift constantly under the dance of light and weather. Every sunrise and storm reveals something new a fleeting colour, a perfect reflection, or the quiet simplicity of nature at rest.
This environment is a paradise for landscape photographers. The contrasts are striking from the soft pastels of dawn over frozen plains to the brilliant textures of snow-dusted ridge-lines. At Charlotte Pass, twisted snow gums frame the horizon in shapes and tones unlike anywhere else in the world.
The alpine rewards patience and presence. Here, stillness becomes your subject, light becomes your guide, and every frame captures the rare beauty of a landscape both fragile and fierce.

Frequently Asked Questions
What photography equipment should I bring?
For this Wild Alpine Photography Tour, we’ll be capturing both wildlife and dramatic alpine landscapes, so versatility is key. Bring a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a range of lenses, a wide-angle (16–35mm) for grand mountain scenes, a mid-range zoom (24–70mm) for general work, and a telephoto (100–400mm or longer) for distant wildlife such as kangaroos, wombats, or brumbies.
A sturdy tripod is essential for sunrise, sunset, and low-light snow scenes, while ND and polarizing filters help control reflections and exposure in bright alpine light. Don’t forget extra batteries, memory cards, and weather protection gear for both you and your equipment conditions can be cold and unpredictable in the Australian Alps.
Is this tour suitable for all skill levels?
Absolutely. This tour welcomes photographers of all experience levels, from beginners wanting to build confidence in the field to professionals seeking unique alpine subjects. Glenn provides personalised guidance and mentorshipthroughout, covering composition, light, and technique for both wildlife and landscape photography.
If you’re new to photography, Glenn can also arrange a one-on-one session before the tour to ensure you’re comfortable with your gear and ready to capture incredible shots in snowy alpine conditions.
How physically demanding is the trip?
A moderate level of fitness is recommended. While most locations are easily accessible, some days involve walking in snow and snowshoeing to reach the best vantage points for shooting wildlife or pristine landscapes.
If there’s heavy snowfall, the conditions can be more demanding, but the pace is relaxed, and support is always available. You don’t need to be an athlete just prepared for a bit of adventure and comfortable spending time outdoors in winter weather.
What is the accomodation and food like?
During the Wild Alpine Photography Tour, we stay at the beautiful Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa, nestled in the heart of the Snowy Mountains. Each participant enjoys their own private room, offering space to relax and unwind after a day of shooting in the alpine wilderness.
The food is exceptional, with hearty breakfasts, wholesome lunches, and delicious dinners prepared using fresh, local ingredients. After days spent photographing snow gums, brumbies, kangaroos, and mountain vistas, you’ll return to warm hospitality, great company, and incredible meals that make this experience as comfortable as it is inspiring.
