Why This Tour Is Different?

Why This Tour Is Unlike Any Other

While many photography tours stay close to paved roads and easy-access locations, our Reindeer Herders expedition goes far beyond. To reach the Tsaatan people, we travel deep into Mongolia’s remote northern Taiga,  a wild, snow-laden forest only accessible by 4WD, then by horse or reindeer. Few outsiders ever make it this far.

Here, we live alongside the last remaining reindeer herders, photographing their daily life as they move through the frozen wilderness. Every portrait, every landscape, every fleeting beam of light belongs entirely to you no crowds, no staged moments, just raw, authentic life at the edge of the world.

This isn’t a typical photo tour. It’s a genuine expedition built on respect, patience, and connection with a nomadic culture that time has almost forgotten.

Learn from an Experienced Photography Expedition Leader

One of the most rewarding parts of this journey is learning directly from me, Glenn McKimmin, a Fujifilm X Photographer with over 17 years of experience leading photography tours across the world. I’ve guided more than 500 photographers through remote regions from Bhutan to Mongolia, and this tour represents one of the most extraordinary photographic experiences on Earth.

Having travelled deep into Mongolia’s far north many times, I know the land, the people, and the light that makes this region so special. Together, we’ll capture the raw beauty of the Taiga and the intimate daily life of the Tsaatan reindeer herders moments few have ever witnessed, let alone photographed.

Throughout the expedition, I’ll provide hands-on guidance, personalised feedback, and insights to help you refine your storytelling through the lens. Whether it’s composing in challenging winter light, connecting authentically with your subjects, or mastering your technical craft in the field, you’ll come away with not only powerful images, but also the confidence and creative growth that comes from true exploration.

This isn’t just a photography tour, it’s an adventure into one of the last wild frontiers, guided by someone who’s been there and knows how to bring out the very best in your photography.

Reindeer Herders Mongolia

Landscapes of Mongolia’s Northern Wilderness

The Frozen Beauty of the Taiga

The landscapes of northern Mongolia are unlike anywhere else on Earth, vast, silent, and impossibly beautiful. The Taiga, a subarctic forest of larch and pine, stretches endlessly toward Siberia. In winter, it transforms into a shimmering world of snow and light — frozen rivers, mist rising from valleys, and mountain ridges glowing under soft pastel skies.

This is a landscape that rewards patience and awareness. Every turn reveals new layers of texture and tone, from the delicate frost on a reindeer’s coat to the sweeping expanse of untouched snow beneath an endless sky. For landscape photographers, this region is pure magic.

Up here, light behaves differently. The air is crisp and clean, giving your images incredible clarity. The palette is subtle icy blues, soft golds, and deep forest greens creating compositions that feel timeless. Whether you’re shooting sweeping panoramas, intimate details of the frozen forest, or the movement of reindeer across the snow, the Taiga will challenge and inspire you at every frame.

This is true wilderness remote, raw, and alive. And for those willing to venture this far, it offers some of the most powerful and emotive photography opportunities in the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

What photography equipment should I bring?

Camera gear can vary since everyone shoots differently. This tour isn’t strictly landscape-focused due to the unique nature of photographing Reindeer Herders. A versatile mix of lenses is recommended, along with a tripod for capturing stunning sunrises and sunsets.

Is this tour suitable for all skill levels?

Most of our tours are fine for beginners, but if you are a little unsure we always recommend a one on one training sessions with Glenn Mckimmin prior to any tour.

How physically demanding is the trip?

The Mongolia Reindeer Herders Tour is not overly demanding physically. While there is bumpy driving each day, the walks are minimal and manageable for most participants. It’s an adventure focused more on photography than strenuous activities.

What is the accomodation and food like?

The accommodation and food during our time with the Reindeer Herders are fairly basic but authentic, providing an immersive experience into the local culture. Expect simple yet comfortable Teepee’s (traditional Mongolian tents) and hearty, rustic meals. This experience is designed to bring you closer to the way of life of the eagle hunters, offering a rare and rewarding opportunity to live like them, even if just for a short time. It’s all part of the adventure!
