Lofoten Northern Lights Photography Tour: Aurora Hunting in Norway’s Arctic Paradise

In Norway’s far north, where jagged granite peaks rise straight from icy fjords and pastel winter light lingers on the horizon, Lofoten becomes a place that feels almost unreal. Snow-dusted fishing cabins glow red against cobalt seas, frozen beaches shimmer beneath Arctic twilight, and at night the sky erupts into ribbons of green and violet as the Northern Lights dance across the archipelago.

Stand beneath them with your camera, watching the aurora ripple over towering mountains and mirror itself in silent fjords — moments so powerful they stay with you long after you return home.

Join Glenn McKimmin on the Lofoten Northern Lights Photography Tour, an immersive winter adventure through one of the world’s most dramatic and photogenic destinations. Photograph iconic locations such as Reine and Hamnøy, where colourful rorbuer cling to the water’s edge; capture expansive panoramas from snowy viewpoints overlooking rugged coastlines; and wander the windswept Arctic beaches of Skagsanden and Uttakleiv, where glowing aurora reflections meet swirling turquoise waves.

Explore hidden inlets, fishing villages frozen in time, and mountain passes that reveal new compositions at every turn. When night falls, we chase the aurora beneath some of the clearest Arctic skies on Earth, learning how to read solar forecasts, anticipate movement, and craft truly extraordinary night images.

This intimate seven-day experience blends cosy Nordic accommodation, refined meals, private transport, and world-class photographic mentoring. Whether you’re shooting long exposures beneath aurora-filled skies, framing the winter light glowing over Reinefjord, or capturing moody scenes in quiet harbours at blue hour, each day brings a new chance to create something extraordinary.

Guided by Glenn’s 17 years of tour-leading experience and his deep knowledge of light, atmosphere, and story, you’ll return home with a portfolio of Arctic images that feel both impossible and unforgettable — photographs that capture the soul of Lofoten in winter.

Learn from an Experienced Photography Expedition Leader

One of the most rewarding parts of this journey is the chance to learn directly in the field with a working photographer who has spent the past 17 years leading tours across the world. I’ve guided more than 500 photographers through places as varied as Mongolia’s Eagle Hunter communities, India’s deserts, the Himalayas, and the Arctic helping them build confidence in light, craft, and storytelling.

Having travelled through Lofoten four times, I’ve come to understand how this region moves, how the light breaks across the fjords in winter, where the aurora tends to dance most reliably, and which quiet beaches and headlands offer the best compositions away from the crowds. Together, we’ll photograph the northern lights, dramatic mountain peaks rising straight from the sea, frozen shorelines, colourful fishing villages, and those vast Arctic skies that shift by the minute.

Throughout the tour, I’ll be right there with you offering hands-on guidance, helping refine your compositions, and showing practical techniques for shooting in cold conditions, balancing exposure under the aurora, and capturing Lofoten’s mood and atmosphere in a way that feels purposeful and expressive.

This is more than a photography trip it’s a carefully built experience designed to help you return home with a stronger portfolio, a clearer understanding of visual storytelling, and a deeper confidence in your own photographic voice.

Lofoten’s Arctic Magic

A Photographer’s Playground of Arctic Light and Wild Coastal Drama

Lofoten in winter feels like stepping into another world where rugged mountains tear straight out of the sea, pastel Arctic skies glow long after sunrise, and the Northern Lights sweep across the night like living brushstrokes. Snow-covered fishing villages glow warm beneath towering peaks, icy fjords mirror soft winter colours, and wild coastal storms roll in with an energy that’s both dramatic and deeply inspiring.

Every region of Lofoten carries its own rhythm from the gentle blue-hour calm over Reine and Hamnøy, to the sweeping golden light that brushes the mountains around Skagsanden Beach, to the powerful mood of Unstad’s arctic surf exploding beneath snow-capped cliffs. Each day brings new possibilities to capture the dance between landscape, light, and weather in one of the world’s most expressive winter environments.

This is a place that transforms every hour. Whether you’re shaping long exposures on windswept beaches, photographing razor-sharp peaks rising from icy fjords, or standing beneath the aurora as it paints the sky green, Lofoten invites you to slow down, watch closely, and create images filled with atmosphere, depth, and story.

Here, winter isn’t an obstacle it’s the magic. The cold sharpens the light, the sea sculpts the land, and the aurora turns the night sky into a canvas. This is Arctic Norway at its most breathtaking and the perfect playground for photographers chasing mood, movement, and unforgettable northern light.

Frequently Asked Questions

What photography equipment should I bring?

Because this tour is centred around dramatic Arctic landscapes and night photography, bringing a mix of wide-angle and telephoto lenses will give you the greatest creative freedom.

A ultra-wide or wide lens is essential for capturing sweeping fjords, snow-covered peaks, frozen coastlines, and—most importantly—the vast sky when the Northern Lights erupt overhead.

A telephoto lens becomes incredibly useful for isolating rugged mountain forms, compressed Arctic layers, distant fishing cabins glowing in winter light, and abstract details in the landscape.

A sturdy tripod is absolutely crucial for long-exposure work, aurora shooting, and low-light scenes in the blue hours that define winter in Lofoten.

Bring the gear you feel comfortable with, keep your setup simple, and you’ll be fully equipped to create atmospheric, powerful images throughout this Arctic adventure.

Is this tour suitable for all skill levels?

Most of our tours are fine for beginners, but if you are a little unsure we always recommend a one on one training sessions with Glenn Mckimmin prior to any tour.

While there are a few short hikes to reach viewpoints and frozen waterfalls, they’re taken at a relaxed pace and suitable for anyone with moderate fitness.
