Photograph the Wild Heart of Kenya Across the Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo and the Great Plains of East Africa
Kenya is one of those places that stays with you long after you leave.
This journey has been designed around some of the most iconic wildlife experiences in Africa from the vast plains of the Maasai Mara to the elephant-rich landscapes of Amboseli and the wild volcanic terrain of Tsavo West. Across the expedition we’ll be photographing lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, birdlife and a huge diversity of East African wildlife while working in some of the most photogenic environments on the continent.
What makes this itinerary particularly special is the balance between incredible wildlife encounters, varied landscapes, and the overall pace of the experience itself.
To reduce long and exhausting overland transfers and maximise our time in the field, key internal flights are included throughout the journey including flights into the Maasai Mara and back to Nairobi. It creates a far more seamless, comfortable and photography-focused experience across what can otherwise be a demanding safari itinerary.
We’ll move from the open savannahs of the Maasai Mara to the lakes and escarpments of Naivasha, before continuing beneath the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro in Amboseli and into the red-earth wilderness of Tsavo West.
Importantly, this expedition is timed specifically for November one of the best periods of the year photographically in Kenya. The grass is generally lower after the dry season, making wildlife sightings and cleaner photographic opportunities far more consistent, while the parks are noticeably quieter than peak migration periods. The softer light, dramatic skies and reduced tourist traffic create a much more rewarding and intimate safari experience overall.
I’ve always believed Africa is best experienced slowly staying flexible, working with the conditions, chasing great light and allowing genuine moments to unfold naturally rather than rushing from sighting to sighting.
The aim is not simply to photograph wildlife, but to experience these landscapes properly and come away with a real connection to them.
This is a layered journey. Wild, immersive, and deeply rewarding.
If you’ve ever dreamed of experiencing East Africa in a meaningful way while photographing some of the planet’s most iconic wildlife and landscapes, this expedition offers the opportunity to do exactly that.

Why This Tour Is Different?
Why This Tour Is Unlike Any Other
While many African safaris focus on covering huge distances and ticking wildlife off a checklist, this journey has been designed around depth, timing, and genuine photographic opportunity. Rather than rushing between destinations, we spend meaningful time in some of Kenya’s most iconic wildlife regions, allowing for repeated game drives, better light, changing conditions, and far greater opportunities to create truly strong images.
But what makes this experience particularly special is the diversity of environments we move through across the expedition itself. From the predator-rich plains of the Maasai Mara to photographing elephants beneath Mount Kilimanjaro in Amboseli, the volcanic landscapes of Tsavo, and the lakes and escarpments of Naivasha, this journey captures multiple sides of East Africa in a way very few itineraries do.
Having spent extensive time photographing and travelling through remote environments around the world, Glenn has designed this expedition to prioritise not just wildlife sightings, but photographic outcomes and overall experience. The pace, locations, seasonal timing and accommodation choices have all been carefully considered to give you the flexibility and space needed to work scenes properly rather than simply racing from one sighting to the next.
Importantly, the safari is timed specifically for November, when Kenya offers exceptional photographic conditions. The grass is generally lower after the dry season, wildlife sightings are often more consistent, and the parks are noticeably quieter than peak migration periods creating a far more relaxed and rewarding experience in the field.
This isn’t a rushed sightseeing safari. It’s a considered photographic expedition built around experience, atmosphere, wildlife encounters, and the opportunity to genuinely connect with one of the world’s great safari destinations.
Learn from an Experienced Photography Expedition Leader
One of the most rewarding aspects of this expedition is learning directly from me, Glenn McKimmin, a Fujifilm X Photographer with over 17 years of experience leading photography tours across the globe. I’ve guided more than 500 photographers through some of the world’s most remarkable destinations from Mongolia and the Himalayas to Africa helping people capture not just wildlife, but atmosphere, light, story and emotion within their images.
Africa presents a unique photographic challenge and opportunity. Wildlife encounters can unfold quickly and unpredictably, and understanding light, behaviour, positioning and timing often makes the difference between simply seeing an animal and creating a truly compelling image.
Throughout this expedition, we’ll work carefully and intentionally in the field photographing everything from elephants beneath Mount Kilimanjaro and lions across the Maasai Mara to birdlife, landscapes and environmental storytelling moments throughout Kenya’s diverse ecosystems.
The itinerary itself has been designed to maximise photographic opportunity while maintaining a relaxed and immersive pace. Rather than rushing endlessly between destinations, we spend meaningful time in key wildlife regions, allowing us to respond to changing conditions, revisit sightings, and work scenes properly.
Throughout the journey, I’ll offer hands-on guidance, personalised feedback, and professional insight to help you develop both technically and creatively. Whether it’s refining composition in fast-moving wildlife situations, understanding animal behaviour, working with dramatic African light, or building stronger visual narratives, this experience is designed to help elevate your photography regardless of your experience level.
This is far more than simply a safari itinerary. It’s a carefully considered photographic expedition built around experience, patience, storytelling and creating meaningful work in some of the most iconic wildlife environments on earth.

Frequently Asked Questions
What photography equipment should I bring?
Camera gear can vary depending on your individual shooting style and experience level. This safari combines wildlife, landscapes and environmental storytelling, so a versatile range of lenses is highly recommended. Telephoto lenses are ideal for wildlife encounters, while wider focal lengths can be useful for landscapes, lodge environments and capturing the scale and atmosphere of East Africa. A tripod is also recommended for sunrise, sunset and low-light landscape opportunities throughout the journey
Is this tour suitable for all skill levels?
Most of our tours are fine for beginners, but if you are a little unsure we always recommend a one on one training sessions with Glenn Mckimmin prior to any tour.
How physically demanding is the trip?
This Tour is not overly demanding physically. While there is bumpy driving whilst in the national parks, the walks are minimal and manageable for most participants. It’s an adventure focused more on photography than strenuous activities.
What is the accomodation and food like?
Accommodation throughout the safari has been carefully selected to balance comfort, atmosphere and proximity to Kenya’s most iconic wildlife regions. From luxury safari camps in the Maasai Mara to lodges overlooking Amboseli and Tsavo’s wild landscapes, each stay has been chosen to enhance the overall experience both photographically and personally. Meals throughout the journey feature a mix of high-quality local and international cuisine, designed to complement the relaxed pace of the expedition.
