Islands of Fire & Stone - A Cinematic Journey Through Indonesia’s Wild Landscapes & Ancient Cultures

Indonesia is one of those places that continues to reveal itself the deeper you travel into it.

Far beyond the familiar image of Bali lies a vast chain of volcanic islands, remote cultures, ancient traditions and cinematic landscapes unlike anywhere else on Earth. This expedition has been carefully designed as an immersive photography journey across some of Indonesia’s most visually extraordinary regions from the lush jungles and temples of Bali through to Komodo National Park, the remote landscapes of Sumba and the volcanic terrain of East Java.

Across the expedition we’ll photograph active volcanoes, rice terraces, waterfalls, mist-filled forests, dramatic coastlines, traditional villages and the legendary Komodo dragons themselves while working in some of the most photogenic environments anywhere in Southeast Asia.

What makes this itinerary particularly special is both the diversity of experiences and the sheer amount of ground we cover across the Indonesian archipelago.

To maximise our time in the field and avoid exhausting transit days, key internal flights have been carefully integrated throughout the journey allowing us to move seamlessly between Bali, Flores, Sumba and Java while focusing far more heavily on photography, atmosphere and experience rather than logistics.

We’ll move from the volcanic landscapes and temples of Bali into the wild islands of Komodo National Park before continuing into the remote savannahs and traditional culture of Sumba. From there the journey shifts into East Java, where sunrise over Mount Bromo, the mist-filled De Djawatan Forest and the dramatic landscapes surrounding Ijen Crater create a far more cinematic and expedition-style finale to the experience.

Importantly, this journey has been designed specifically around photography and visual storytelling rather than simply sightseeing.

I’ve always believed the strongest travel experiences come from slowing down working with the light, revisiting locations, allowing landscapes to unfold naturally and spending meaningful time within the places we visit rather than constantly rushing through them.

The aim is not simply to photograph Indonesia, but to properly experience the atmosphere, scale and diversity of the country itself. This is a layered journey. Wild, immersive and visually extraordinary.

If you’ve ever dreamed of experiencing Indonesia beyond the obvious while photographing volcanoes, wild islands, ancient culture and cinematic landscapes, this expedition offers the opportunity to do exactly that.

Why This Tour Is Different?

Why This Tour Is Unlike Any Other

While many Indonesia itineraries focus almost entirely on Bali or move too quickly between destinations, this expedition has been designed around depth, atmosphere and genuine photographic opportunity. Rather than rushing through locations, we spend meaningful time across some of Indonesia’s most visually extraordinary regions, allowing us to work with changing light, revisit scenes and create far stronger photographic outcomes throughout the journey.

What makes this experience particularly unique is the sheer diversity of landscapes, cultures and environments we move through across the expedition itself. From the volcanic landscapes and temples of Bali to the wild islands of Komodo National Park, the remote savannahs and traditional villages of Sumba, and the cinematic volcanic terrain of East Java, this journey reveals multiple sides of Indonesia that very few travellers ever experience within a single itinerary.

Carefully planned internal flights between islands allow us to cover an incredible amount of ground comfortably and efficiently while maximising our time in the field rather than losing days to difficult logistics and long transit periods.

Having spent years photographing remote environments and building immersive photography experiences around the world, Glenn has designed this expedition to prioritise not simply sightseeing, but photographic outcomes, atmosphere and overall experience. The pace, locations, accommodation and timing have all been carefully considered to create a far more rewarding and visually rich journey throughout the Indonesian archipelago.

This isn’t a rushed island-hopping holiday. It’s a considered photographic expedition built around volcanic landscapes, wild islands, ancient culture and the opportunity to genuinely experience Indonesia beyond the obvious.

Travelling through Indonesia photographically is about far more than simply visiting beautiful locations. The constantly changing landscapes, shifting weather, dramatic light and cultural depth of the country create endless opportunities for visual storytelling but also require patience, flexibility and an understanding of how to work within these environments creatively.

Having spent more than 17 years leading photography expeditions around the world, Glenn has designed this journey to balance both immersive travel experience and meaningful photographic opportunity. From photographing sunrise over active volcanoes and mist-filled forests to working with local culture, landscapes and remote island environments, the expedition has been built to allow photographers the time and space needed to properly engage with each location.

Throughout the journey, we’ll work intentionally in the field across a huge variety of subjects and conditions from temples, waterfalls and rice terraces in Bali to Komodo dragons, traditional villages, volcanic landscapes and the remote savannahs of Sumba. The constantly evolving nature of the itinerary creates an incredibly rich and rewarding photographic experience while also helping participants strengthen their ability to work across different environments, light and storytelling situations.

Importantly, this is not a fast-paced sightseeing tour designed simply to move from one location to the next. The itinerary has been carefully structured to maximise photographic outcomes while maintaining a relaxed and immersive pace allowing time to revisit scenes, work changing conditions and respond naturally to the atmosphere of each location.

Throughout the expedition, Glenn will offer guidance, insight and personalised support in the field helping participants refine composition, work with natural light, approach storytelling and build stronger, more intentional imagery regardless of experience level.

This is far more than simply an Indonesia holiday. It’s a carefully considered photographic expedition built around atmosphere, exploration, creativity and experiencing one of the world’s most visually extraordinary countries in a meaningful way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What photography equipment should I bring?

Camera gear can vary depending on your individual shooting style and experience level. This expedition combines volcanic landscapes, wildlife, culture, environmental storytelling and travel photography across a wide range of conditions, so a versatile selection of lenses is highly recommended. Wider focal lengths are ideal for landscapes, temples, interiors and environmental scenes, while mid-range and telephoto lenses are excellent for Komodo dragons, distant subjects, portraits and compressed landscape compositions. A tripod is also recommended for sunrise volcano shoots, waterfalls, low-light scenes and long-exposure photography opportunities throughout the journey.

Is this tour suitable for all skill levels?

Most of our tours are fine for beginners, but if you are a little unsure we always recommend a one on one training sessions with Glenn Mckimmin prior to any tour.

How physically demanding is the trip?

This Tour is not overly demanding physically. While there is bumpy driving whilst in the national parks, the walks are minimal and manageable for most participants. It’s an adventure focused more on photography than strenuous activities.

What is the accomodation and food like?

Accommodation throughout the expedition has been carefully selected to balance comfort, character and proximity to some of Indonesia’s most visually extraordinary regions. Throughout much of the journey we stay in beautiful boutique and luxury-style properties, however in some of the more remote areas the accommodation is simpler reflecting the nature of travelling through less developed parts of the Indonesian archipelago. In every location, we prioritise the best available options while maintaining the authenticity and immersive feel of the experience itself. Meals throughout the journey feature a mix of excellent local Indonesian cuisine and international options, complementing the relaxed and adventurous pace of the expedition.
