New Zealand is a photographer’s dream, and I’ve been running photo tours there since 2010, making it one of my favorite destinations. My love for New Zealand goes beyond its world-renowned landscapes—it’s the diversity, the ever-changing weather, and the magic that happens when light hits the mountains, fjords, and beaches just right. That’s why my New Zealand Photo Tours are designed to give you the best possible experience in this incredible country.

New Zealand’s South Island, known as Te Wai Pounamu or the “Water of Greenstone” by the Māori, offers some of the most spectacular landscape photography opportunities in the world. From the towering peaks of the Southern Alps to the dramatic fjords of Fiordland, and the wind-sculpted beaches of the West Coast, you’ll find an endless array of stunning locations. It’s no surprise that films like The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Avatar were shot in these very landscapes.

What sets my New Zealand photography tours apart is the depth of my knowledge and experience. I’ve been leading photographers through these landscapes for over a decade, so I know the best spots for every type of shot—whether you’re looking to capture majestic mountains, crystal-clear lakes, or the vibrant colors of autumn. We’ll be staying at some of the most picturesque locations, giving you ample time to explore and photograph in the best light.

One of the unique aspects of photographing in New Zealand is the ease of travel between locations. In just a few hours, you can move from the rugged coastline of the West Coast to the golden fields and lakes of the Central Otago region. The constantly changing weather adds another layer of excitement, creating fresh, dynamic scenery for your photos at every stop.

If you’re searching for a New Zealand photo tour that delivers both iconic and off-the-beaten-path locations, while offering expert guidance and support, then this is the tour for you. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just starting out, you’ll walk away with not only incredible images but also unforgettable memories. Join me, Glenn McKimmin, and experience New Zealand like never before, through the lens of your camera.

On the way, we’ll pass through the picturesque Canterbury Plains, offering stunning views of vast farmland with the Southern Alps in the distance. This journey sets the tone for the incredible landscapes we’ll be capturing throughout the trip. Once we arrive at Lake Tekapo, you'll have time to settle into our accommodation before heading out to explore the stunning turquoise lake, framed by snow-capped mountains. We'll finish the day with an evening shoot. Get ready for an unforgettable start to our New Zealand autumn photography adventure!

Day 2: Lake Tekapo to Wanaka – Hidden Gems and Scenic Photography
After an early breakfast, we’ll start Day 2 with a sunrise shoot by the stunning shores of Lake Tekapo, capturing the golden morning light as it reflects off the vibrant turquoise waters and snow-dusted peaks. From there, we’ll hit the road to Wanaka, but rest assured, this isn’t just a straight drive—I've got plenty of secret photography spots planned along the way. As we head south, we’ll take a detour through the rugged landscapes of Lindis Pass, where the rolling hills and tussock-covered plains provide perfect compositions for some dramatic landscape shots. Keep your camera ready because the light in this region can shift rapidly, creating new opportunities at every turn. We’ll stop at some of my personal favorite hidden locations that few photographers know about, from secluded alpine streams to breathtaking vantage points with sweeping views of the Southern Alps. After a full day of capturing the magic of the South Island, we’ll arrive in Wanaka. We’ll settle in and wrap up with an evening shoot by the iconic Wanaka Tree, weather permitting, with the serene lake and distant peaks providing a stunning backdrop. Prepare for another rewarding day of photography as we explore the untouched beauty of this region!

Day 3: Wanaka to Te Anau – Sunrise at the Wanaka Tree and Scenic Journey
We’ll begin Day 3 bright and early with a sunrise shoot at the famous Wanaka Tree, one of the most iconic and photographed trees in the world. As the sun rises over Lake Wanaka, we’ll capture the peaceful scene of the lone willow tree standing in the water, framed by the rugged mountains and soft morning light. After breakfast, we’ll head towards Te Anau, but not without a few stops along the way to take advantage of the South Island’s incredible landscapes. I’ll guide you to some lesser-known spots, from quiet lakes and mountain vistas to hidden viewpoints that offer unique photography opportunities most tours miss. As we journey through the lush valleys and rolling hills, we’ll stop to photograph locations along the shores of Lake Hawea and Lake Wakatipu, with their mirror-like reflections and towering mountain backdrops. Arriving in Te Anau by late afternoon, you’ll have time to settle in before an evening shoot by the lake, capturing the serene beauty of this gateway to Fiordland National Park. The day will end with a peaceful sunset shoot as the mountains surrounding Te Anau are bathed in the soft light of the evening. Get ready for a full day of capturing the best of New Zealand’s natural beauty, from iconic landmarks to hidden gems only locals know about!

Day 4: Te Anau to Milford Sound – Hidden Photography Spots and Iconic Milford Sound
Day 4 is all about one of my absolute favorite places—Milford Sound. We’ll start our adventure early, making stops at some secret locations along the way, showcasing breathtaking landscapes that many tourists miss. As we leave Te Anau, we’ll journey through Fiordland National Park, where towering peaks and cascading waterfalls await. We’ll pause at hidden viewpoints, capturing the stunning mountain ranges, mirror-like lakes, and lush valleys that define this area. The highlight of the day will be Milford Sound itself. Known as the "eighth wonder of the world," this stunning fjord features dramatic cliffs and the majestic Mitre Peak rising sharply from the water. We’ll spend the afternoon photographing its beauty from various angles, both on land and water, as the light shifts and reveals its breathtaking scenery. After a full day of capturing the magic of Milford Sound, we’ll head back to Te Anau, reflecting on a day filled with unforgettable sights and incredible photography opportunities.
